The Applegarth Experience

“There are B&Bs and B&Bs, Andrew and Kirsteen have created an exquisite experience …everything is perfect.  The Rooms are worthy of any 5* hotel and better equipped than most” ~ Philip & Peta, York.

Guests are welcomed into Andrew and Kirsteen’s bright and welcoming home. There is a lovely period drawing room where tea with homemade scones and cakes are waiting on your arrival. Also refreshing homemade elderflower cordial if you like.

Kirsteen offers dinner by prior request and at time of booking to the travel weary ~ so there is no need to drive anywhere once you arrive. A 2-course dinner is served. A proposed menu is sent in advance having established any dietary requirements.

When only one couple is staying an intimate candlelit dinner is laid in the bay window.

Guests are invited to join Andrew and Kirsteen in the drawing room for a complimentary drink before dinner. On sunny evenings ~ in the garden.

Otherwise, when more people are staying dinner is served in the elegant dining room. Andrew and Kirsteen sometimes host, and it turns into a very jolly dinner party!

The House & Garden

In the warm and sunny months, you are welcome to walk around the garden and sit and have tea. The mound at the end is a 12th Century Motte which was where the original fortified dwelling of the Clan Jardine stood and is a Scheduled Monument. The Jardine Clan Gathering is held at Applegarth every 4 years.

We have created a decking on the west side of the garden with views of fields of sheep and cattle and the Annandale hills beyond. A lovely spot to watch the sun go down with a glass of wine. Alternatively, when cold, enjoy a drink and a cosy meal in front of a roaring fire.

There is also an informal family room with TV which guests are welcome to relax in.

DOGS – Please note, well behaved dogs are welcome by prior arrangement but cannot go upstairs or in bedrooms. They can either sleep with Millie and Phoebe, the hosts two, friendly labradors, or in other dog friendly areas in the house.

Next door to us is Applegarth Church which is full of history. We rang the bell for the NHS during lockdown.

Travellers often arrive as guests and depart as friends and many return again and again.
